Tuberculosis in the Mining Sector (TIMS)

Between October 2016 and December 2017, OGRA Foundation implemented the service package B of the TB in the Mining Sector in Southern Africa (TIMS) project. This followed a competitive selection process where OGRA Foundation was selected by the Principal Recipient – Wits Health Consortium (WHC) from South Africa. The project, valued at USD 3.485 million, involved Operationalizing and Managing Occupational Health Service Centres (OHSCs) for Miners, Ex-miners, their families and perimining communities. During the project period OGRA operationalized and successfully managed 10 OHSCs in Lesotho, Swaziland, Mozambique, Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Tanzania. The OHSCs were able to offer the package of care to the beneficiary population as earlier anticipated. These include TB screening, HIV testing, Clinical evaluation, Chest X-ray, Spirometry, Audiometry, Gene X-pert testing for TB, Benefits Medical Examination and submission for compensation. The project conducted TB screening for 9418 Miners and Ex-miners of whom 292 were diagnosed with TB and started on treatment. These had been missed by the routine medical care available in these communities and were therefore at risk of deterioration and also formed a source of infection in the communities. OGRA Foundation developed a patient flow chart and an Operational manual that guided OHSC operations.
